NavigationGod: Not Your Typical New Year's Post, Part I

Let me first lay out the disclaimer that this is not your typical New Year’s post full of reflections and resolutions, in case the title did not indicate such with clarity.

Secondly, I must confess that while the illustration of God being your GPS system is a tired cliché, that’s exactly the illustration I am using. Sorry, I’m not sorry.

Saturday, December 25, 2010 - Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

With all the hub-bub surrounding the holiday season in today’s society, this picture puts things into such perspective for me. A kneeling Santa. It’s so simple, yet so profound.

I mean Santa’s cute and all, but it’s so easy to lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas — which is the celebration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’s birth. Through Him alone we have been saved by grace and through Him alone we can shine light into this darkened world. Nothing He asks of us is ever too much to repay our debt.

While we’re on the subject of the real Christmas story, I’d like to give praise to Mary. As a woman in my early twenties I am nearly twice the age Mary was when her life was changed, and I just want to give her props for her amazing strength, courage and faith. She was impregnated, had to face her confused fiance, and together they became pariahs of their society. Then, at the tender age of 12 or 13, she gave birth as a virgin in a cold alleyway with no epidural and no mother by her side to coach her. If that isn’t courage, I want you to show me what is. Bless the mother of our Savior.

And another thing: what is X-Mas? I understand that the less religious and the more commercial this holiday becomes, we are beginning to have no qualms about de-holy-fying* the verbiage affiliated with it, but for Christians it should still Christmas. CHRISTmas. We are called not only to spread the holiness of Christianity, but to preserve it, so can we please stop abbreviating Christ before he turns around and abbreviates us? Thanks.

Here’s the spoiler: sorry kids, Santa’s not real :(

Here’s the bright side: Jesus is :)

*I know it may be hard to tell, but I made that word up. Don’t try using it in public, people will think you’re illiterate.
