Don't Take the Service Elevator

Most weeks I don't necessarily need a celebration for Friday, but this one threw me through the ringer. I thought it would never end. I've been mentally and physically exhausted, so though my weekend brings no reprieve from activity, when I say I was more
than excited about Friday arriving, just know there was an extra three or four peps in my step.

It was one of my late mornings and I wasn’t traveling, so I didn’t have to be at work until 8am. I stroll through the double doors at 7:55, with my coffee thermos nestled in the crook of my left arm and water bottle in my left hand, rolling my workbag with my right, and ready to get this day over. So I thought.

I arrive at adjacent elevators right as the doors to both are closing. “Here we go,” I sighed, knowing I would have to wait for the elevator to stop on every……single……floor before making its way back down to the lobby.

As I waited "patiently," a young guy who works for another company in my building pressed the button to the service elevator and hopped on. He saw my confused face, and responded with “I always use this! It’s so much faster.”

Of course, I joined him. Wait for these other boxes? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

He promptly hit the button for his floor and then I asked for him to press the button for mine, as we made 13 seconds of small talk about the weather and the parking lot. He got off when it was his time and I rode to my floor, excited about this little secret I would get to share with my team.

Except…when I got to my floor the elevator wouldn’t open.

Let me retract that statement. The doors behind me opened, leading to some nondescript hallway I didn't dare explore. But the doors in front of me, the doors I needed to lead me into my office, wouldn't budge.

7th floor button. 7th floor button. 7th floor button.

Oh crap. (And I did not say “oh crap.”)

Open Door button. Open Door button. Open Door button.

Nada.

Crap. Crap. CRAP.

Do. Not. PANIC.

And then it hit me: just go back to where you started.

So in a moment where Jesus saved me from myself (because the drama was getting real, y'all), I pressed the button for the lobby and as I whipped my laptop bag out into the atrium, I met eyes with a very confused coworker, waiting to hear exactly what was going on. As I explained the scenario, she laughed and said “Girl, all you had to do was use your fob, if you have security access.”

Oh, that was it, huh?

There were two vital factors missing from making this a successful “shortcut.”

First, I had to know that my fob would allow me access to my floor from that particular elevator and to know to look for the pad on which I would swipe it.

Second, I had to have been previously granted the security clearance to even get off that elevator. Normally, when I take the elevators designated for my floor, I just have to swipe my badge to get into the locked doors, not to actually get out of the moving box.

Both pieces were integral, both very simple, but I had neither.

You see, what works for that young man every day did not work for me.

And that, I realized, was because we were going to two different places.

Where does God have you going that the person whose journey you're trying to follow will not lead?

What pieces are you missing that are holding you up on the route you chose, the route that is different from what God has for you?

It has been a hard lesson to learn the last year or so that my journey is not going to look like my sister’s, my best friend’s, my mentor’s, or anyone else’s journey. Nor should it.

But the more I fall into the comparison trap of “why can’t I __________” and “why hasn’t God _________,” the less I am able to focus on “but God saved me from _____” and “He’s preparing me for _______.”

Luckily for us, just because we don’t do things God's way the first time doesn’t mean we will never get to the destination He has purposed for us.

BBC (Before Brittany’s Coffee) Lesson Number 1
: Stop rushing. Whether you’re rushing God, rushing other people or rushing yourself…the outcome is rarely, if ever, positive. And more often than not, you’ll have to go back to the beginning to get on the right path.

BBC Lesson Number 2
: Stop thinking other people’s journeys will get you to your destination. Had I been going to the 3rd floor, I could have ridden with that nice young gentleman and called it a day. But I wasn’t. I was going somewhere else and the path I chose was not the way to get there.

BBC Lesson Number 3:
Wait patiently for your access to be granted. Stop trying to force things to happen that you may not be ready to receive. The security level attached to my badge is directly related to my identification and my job role. Higher security levels come with more responsibilities. If you're not ready for those responsibilities, you don't need to jump ahead of the line to use the access pass, either. I am right where I belong based on my experience and where God has placed me in this season. And so are you.

BBC Lesson Number 4: Remember that it is OK that God knows more than we do. Trust that He will share what we need to know, when we need to know it. Until then, trust what we do know. And we know that He is good. He is good and He will work all things together for our good, as long as we love Him.

"Desire without knowledge is not good --
how much more will hasty feet miss the way!
A person's own folly leads to their ruin,
yet their heart rages against the Lord."
Proverbs 19:2 (NIV)

When Your Thoughts and Your Faith Don't Match

I had an amazing dinner last night with two of the most special people in my life. Driving home I just savored the thought of the blessings I have experienced just by knowing them. Then this morning happened. And it was rough. Really rough. The enemy does not like us to be grateful.

In that delicate space between recalling a dream and being fully awake and alert, I realized I was having thoughts I'd rather not have and I could not shake them, and let's just say that does not make for a "Rise and Shine" attitude from this young lady here. In fact, frustration turned to anger then to self-pity.

I know I am blessed. I know I am loved. So why is this one thing bothering me? I have an amazing job, incredible friends I see every day, an outstanding family of faith and church where I can't wait until the next opportunity to attend or serve. Why, God, can't I just focus on the gifts you have given me and not this one stressful factor?

The same words went through my head with each emotion. Those words came out in a sigh of frustration, they came out in a shout of anger, and they came out in a cry of self-pity.

All before 6 am. I told y'all...it was rough.

Laying with my head under the covers, I went from trying to pray away those thoughts, to praying for a particular person, to moving the focus from myself by praying for other friends and family members, to begging God to fill this absence... because He's all I need, right?

When nothing seemed to make me feel better, I just got out of bed and decided to have a good day.

That was that. I needed to make a decision and act on it.

Because sometimes we try to take control back from God, but sometimes we use Him as a crutch and we pray for things that we are fully capable, through the power He has given us, of handling ourselves.

Decision made.

Shower. Makeup. Throw a few bobby pins into this lion's mane called hair. Grab a dress from the closet, because Praise Jehovah, it's gonna be 77 today! Rummage through the clothes on my "laundry chair" to find a cardigan I've probably worn no less than 3 times since the last wash.

Keep busy. Keep talking to God. Keep busy. Keep talking to God. Eventually the thoughts will go away.

Right as I was walking into my training location for today, I read the following post on a friend, mentor, brother's Facebook wall:

God has released power in your life today.
Everything you need is within you.
God has placed the seeds of power, love, and peace in your heart,
and you're about to see what He's been planning for you all along.
Expect to be in the right place at the right time to meet the right people...TODAY!

Oh...thank...you...Jesus. Thank you for sending that reminder that even when we need to just move, you still remember the cries of our hearts and answer those prayers.

I start reciting...I will be in the right place at the right time. I will meet the right people. They will be in the right place at the right time. There is nothing I have to do except follow the steps You have prepared for me. You have released Your power in me, and because of that, I am going to be in the right place at the right time to meet the right people...TODAY!

I stop reciting...because I look bat[crap] crazy talking to myself and I don't have a Bluetooth or headset to blame it on. But I walk into my classroom believing that I am going to be in the right place at the right time to meet the right people and I set up my training environment with a fresh perspective ready to take on the day.

One of my favorite students -- oh, I mean this lady I like a lot, since we "don't have favorites" -- was on the roster this morning. She's one of those people you work with and you think "we could definitely be friends outside of work." The kind that for every day since her first class last week, we hug at the end of class one day and remember to ask about the kid's birthday parties and friend's wedding plans at the beginning of the next class.

One of my other students joined us and I remembered teaching her a few months ago, and greeted her asking about her experience in her clinic so far. We discussed challenges and triumphs and then jumped into the material.

Who knew, we were in the right place...this was the right time...and she was the right person?

Well, Someone knew.

Somehow during one of the breaks, we started to talk about stress and it's effect on health and things of that nature.

And lo and behold, the student became the teacher.

Her passion for this topic that she is able to travel throughout our company and present to other departments, as well as travel throughout the nation to lecture on, just spilled over and you better believe I was right there wiping it all up.

Please understand that what I share next is extraordinarily paraphrased. I know nothing about the science behind this, so don't ask me any questions.

As she dove into her explanation about how thoughts are chemical and they are transmitted into energy, I was more than intrigued. I was enamored. It all made perfect sense, yet I had never learned it in this aspect before.

She asked if I felt if opposites attract?

I giggled, thinking of my experiences thus far, but she looked right at me and said, "No, I'm really asking you. What do you think?"

".....I don't even know," I stammered.

She then explained why the answer is {opposites do not attract.} She went into an illustration of placing a negative magnet and a positive magnet on a table and said "you call me when they come together, because you'll be sitting a long time."

"Thoughts are magnetic," she went on. "They only attract their likeness." The idea of opposites attract is null and void here. "So positive thoughts attract positivity, negative attracts negativity."

So you mean to tell me that my negative thoughts are not going to bring me positive energy?

Well, duh. I've heard this a million different ways, it just never clicked quite like this.

Just because I don't say my negative thoughts out loud doesn't mean they aren't festering inside, spreading to and taking over the positive thoughts like a cancer (really, like a cancer...we talked about the link between cancer and heart disease and thoughts and energies) causing decay.

If everything is energy, that includes thoughts and feelings. Thoughts and feelings are energy, too.

She went on to explain that if you have a negative thought, jealousy, worry, or fear, that neurotransmitter will be created in it's likeness and it will be a negative energy. That chemical messenger will transmit into the cells in the body, and that is what turns our cells into pathogens.

Fascinating. But again, don't ask me to expand on that explanation.

So what do we do about these negative thoughts and feelings?

What happens when we pray and pray and they don't seem to leave?

When we consciously tell ourselves, I know I am blessed and I have so much for which to be grateful, yet the thoughts still plague us?

Without me even asking the question out loud, she answered.

"The brain can't process no's and don't's, so when you have a negative thought, saying 'I don't want to think that' will not work. You just change it into a positive thought.

Her approach is not spiritual, but you can't dare tell me it doesn't apply.

"Set your mind on things above,
not on earthly things."
Colossians 3:2 (NLT)

Before you get all Holy Ghost on me, I am not opening up a theological debate. Nor am I suggesting a "Name It and Claim It" deal.

I am simply sharing what God opened my eyes to today in the event that someone else reading this had a vulnerable moment (or a few), too, and needs to remember that science and faith are not mutually exclusive and that God created us in such a way that the intricate details of our very existence all point to the very things we believe.

God's promises are in the Kingdom of Heaven. By His stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53) may not be witnessed on this side of eternity, but it will happen. Does that mean we stop believing for it? Absolutely not!

Harping on negativity does not please God. No, God is pleased when we believe His word, when our faith in Him multiplies because of His faithfulness to us, because of His love for us.

We often refer to the following verse in regards to the fear and power portion, but we often (at least I'll admit, I often) pay no attention to the last two words.

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear,
but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV, emphasis added)

Let us forget no longer.

To Build, To Melt, or to Watch it Fall?

This past weekend I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Nashville to speak to college women at a “Gal-entine’s Retreat.” The invitation to speak was particularly timely in my own life, as I was asked to address singleness (in the context of being unmarried, not necessarily excluding those in dating relationships) and how, as daughters of the Most High, we should look to Christ for our significance and identity and expose the lies about relationships we are fed by our culture and society.

Forgotten Dreams

Dreams.

I have them often. And when I say often I mean every night for months on end and then maybe I'll get a break for a while.

There are a billion resources to help guide you in analyzing and interpreting your dreams. You hear all types of things about dreams. Don't eat right before you go to sleep. What certain dreams mean. So forth and so on. But as Joseph said (Genesis 40:8), interpreting dreams is God's business.

Are You a Control Freak?

My mama said I need to start posting more frequently. I guess waiting every few months for a less than stellar glimpse into my mind was proving anti-climatic, so for the three people who read this other than my mom, you are welcome. :)

I would like to start this post by declaring that I am not a control freak. I'm really not. Things just work SO MUCH BETTER when I am in control. Let's be real.

Wonderful, Fearful People

If you've never heard me talk about Emeli Sandé there's a chance we're not true friends. I'm sorry you had to find out this way, but my borderline obsession hasn't broken since I was first introduced to her artistry summer of 2012 and you're not going to come between that.

Someone asked me recently what took me so long to write. I don’t have an answer, other than I just wasn’t ready. I was journaling privately, but I wasn’t ready to share my thoughts publicly for many reasons.

Verdict....Not Guilty??

Last night, my handsome love and I were in Savannah enjoying an amazing dinner on the river while many were glued to the television anxiously awaiting the verdict for the George Zimmerman trial to be announced. I knew it was coming, but I wasn't checking any updates as we try to be intentional about not using our phones when we are spending time together.

Faith for the Cray

Last night, my friend came over to watch the premiere of the History Channel's new miniseries, “The BIble.”

With our red wine in hand and my archaeological Bible from cemetery -- uh, seminary -- between us, we flipped through Genesis and Exodus as we followed the sequence of events on screen, marveling at how details we had easily forgotten from the most common Bible stories were so impressively brought to life.

The F Word

Some consider it a dirty word. Others struggle saying it aloud, and many more have trouble submitting to it.

One word. Seven letters.

43%

43%.

That's how many women are walking around each day who have had abortions.

Forty-three percent.

That's the kind of number that makes you say "what in the hell is going on in this world?"

Life is Like a Treasure Hunt

For you are a holy people,
who belong to the Lord your God.
Of all the people on earth,
the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.

Praise

Someone recently asked me how I'm "doing so well with all of this." All of what? I started to respond, defensively. But then I realized what they meant. All of this tunnel season I'm experiencing. In need of a job and a place to live and I'm actually still living life? I "look so happy" in my pictures. I seem to be "doing so much." There must be some crazy secret to my glory, right?

Let me first express the disclaimer that, while all intentions were good, those are some of the most obnoxious statements ever.

I don't look happy in my pictures, I am happy; I am filled with joy.

I'm not busy for the sake of being busy; I am enjoying life with my loved ones because the gift of each day is what keeps me going and to waste it depressed in bed would be a sin against God.

Pity is disrespectful. If you feel sorry for someone, in any situation, please stop. If you feel burdened to pray for them, do that. But don't pity them. It's gross.

Anyway, here is my answer. This is not a fantastic post sharing life lessons God is teaching me, though I will update soon because He is doing some magnificent things.

Today I just want to answer this question, and it is simple: I refuse to look at anything as less than a blessing.

The call in the morning to substitute: a blessing of provision.
No calls in the morning: a blessing of rest.
Another correspondence alerting me of a company's decision to hire someone else: a blessing of protection.
Interruptions: blessings of the Holy Spirit, reminders that my plans have nothing on God's plans.
Blessings, blessings, blessings.
In everything there is a blessing. You just have to choose to seek and accept.

So I give thanks.
Always.
Every day.
Throughout each day.
When I am extremely grateful.
When I don't understand anything.
When I don't feel like it.
Giving thanks for all of my circumstances.
Praising God for what He's done in my past.
Praising God for what He has already done in my future.
Praising, praising, praising.

That is how I'm "doing so well with all of this."

Thank you for asking.

How to Be Holy

What does it look like to be holy?

When I hear the word holy I think of angels floating in sheer white gowns, playing harps, and singing praises to our King.

When I think of being holy I think of abstaining from sex, censoring curse words, refraining from gossip, and helping the homeless. Every now and again, purity of the heart slips into that definition, but only on good days.

Perspective is a Choice

I have been overwhelmed by the comments, texts and calls of everyone who felt that my blog post [How I Feel About My Failure] gave them a voice in their own life situations. Many of these came from participants (now friends) who were part of the same program and are going through unemployment woes mixed with confusion and feelings of that “F” word, and others who were able to draw their own parallels to what is going on in their lives.

Sinful Politics

Note: this post is fueled by my Christian values, so if you do not identify with Christ as your Savior you very well may not agree with them. And even if you do, you still may not agree, but that's OK because I'm not here to make a political statement that pleases you.

What Singles Want You to Stop Asking

*Editor's Note: I originally intended to release this as a two-part post, but I haven’t finished the other one quite yet and I am desperately seeking a study break. Enjoy!

I believe I am going to be a wife one day.

I believe this because God has put this desire in my heart.

I believe that God put this desire in my heart because I had no desire previously to get married or have children and now I pray consistently for that future blessing.

Being raised in a broken home, plagued with abuse and divorce and watching my mother struggle constantly to provide the best environment she could for me to thrive made me promise myself early on to never live life that way.
If marriage was about hurting another person, I didn’t want to be married. If parenthood was about abandoning your child, I didn’t want to have children.

Science & God

The more I study for these stupid challenging Praxis exams the more I am reminded how much I hate dislike tests and I plan to give my future students as many open-book assignments allowed.

Spending each day in science and psychology textbooks has provoked my thinking in ways never considered in high school or undergrad because my faith was not at all a part of my life the way it is today.

Rather than doubting God’s existence, like many others, I have marveled at the idea that people can question His existence after looking at the evidence presented by science.

I can only thank God for a faith like that.

Change - Part 1

"Change is good."

People like me want to punch people who say things like that in the sidethroat. I'm not a proponent of violence, but I'm also not entirely in favor of change.

Change can be good. Just in recent history (recent as in the past few centuries), we've seen amazing changes that have positively affected people. From slavery to emancipation, women's rights, minority rights, technological advances, mission work, and so on, changing people's circumstances and situations for the better have impacted their lives in ways mostly indescribable.

Even still, I prefer this quote from Mark Twain:

“The only person who likes change is a wet baby.”
I find that much more accurate.

Sick and Tired of Tolerance

Tolerance is annoying.

Not because of the concept, itself, but because we just can't seem to get it right.

We tolerate those whose attitudes and opinions reflect our own.

We can't stand those who present a conflict. And then we call them intolerant.

Will you allow me to be blunt for a moment?

Christians get the shortest end of the toleration stick.

With prayer removed from schools and "freedom" of speech, if you are a Christian, being attacked left and right, the debate regarding separation of church and state is at an all-time high.

Dare I even broach the whole Chick-Fil-A issue?

I Am the First and the Worst

"I am the first and the worst!"

I had the pleasure of attending church with the incredible man I am dating and his family this past weekend. It was so refreshing. I love my job, but being able to worship anonymously is always so freeing.

Somehow, every time we visit we end up sitting on the same pew as this gentleman who serves as a deacon at the church and, let's just say, he's quite a colorful character. Very participatory, shouting "Amen!" and "Preach Pastor!" and repeating illustrations or predicting sermon points all throughout the message. To some he may be distracting, but to me he is magnificent. So unreserved...so alive.

Even better, his appearance matches his personality to the tee, with activator* in his combed back, shoulder-length, jet black hair and each finger on both hands adorned with rings the size of my eyeballs. Again, this man is nothing if not interesting.
