Busyness is Not a Badge of Honor

Busyness is not a badge of honor.

Really, it's not.

But we wear it proudly as if it is. In fact, lately every time I hear those words, "Girl, you're so busy!" I cringe at the hopeless appeal for approval that rings in the air.

Look at me, I have so much going on that you must consider me important.

What kind of bull…crap….is that?

Our worth comes from our Father ALONE. No ones approval on this Earth is needed. POINT BLANK PERIOD.

Though, I find myself saying how busy I am, I don't say it to make others feel like they have nothing going on. I say it to remind myself to stop…and b r e a t h e.

Between trying to spend quality time with new friends without leaving the old ones out, working on a new relationship with an old boo, getting acclimated to a new job with my old habits (which requires a lot of beautifully taxing travel that I love and hate all of the time, at the same time), I find myself right smack dab in the middle of a season of busy.

The thing is, I recognize that you are, too.

You're a student, trying to balance a job and friends, maybe a significant other or children.

You're in the workforce, learning how to climb the ladder and trying to figure out if you even want to.

You're the parent of a tiny, precious being who teaches you more about yourself every day than you could dream of learning elsewhere.

You're battling an illness, desiring community outside of a doctor's office.

You're spearheading a start-up, while maintaining your full time position elsewhere.

You're serving, you're sharing, you're loving. And you're busy doing it.

I have found myself complaining about being too busy to spend time on my blog…but even in the short time since I got home this afternoon I found myself in my happy place again as my fingers tapped these keys, allowing me to connect with myself in a way I have missed oh so much.

Wherever you are, you're in a season of busy.

But you know what is a badge of honor?

Grace.

The grace that comes from our Father.

The grace that we extend to ourselves….the grace to say no…the grace to rest.

And we all know that rest is at it's most perfect, it's most peaceful, when it comes directly from Abba.

"Unless the Lord builds a house,
the work of the builders is wasted.
Unless the Lord protects a city,
guarding it with sentries will do no good.
It is useless for you to work so hard
from early morning until late at night,
anxiously working for food to eat;
for God gives rest to his loved ones."
Psalm 127:1-2

*Disclaimer: Not that it matters, but I am not a Rob Bell fan and I disagree with a bit of his theology, I just appreciate this quote.

  1. I love this because I am not entirely certain there is ever a season on un-busy!,

  2. Right Ally?! I keep thinking if I can just get to the next [whatever], things will slow down. Not so. But that's the beauty in the journey. Love your most recent post, btw....totally what I needed!
